I am currently working with Prof. Mark Simons developing a methodology and the corresponding computational codes to investigate the extent of apparent inter-plate coupling on subduction zone megathrusts. We approach this problem from a Bayesian perspective, where we ask not for a single optimum model, but for the entire family of models that explain the observations. By finding the full range of allowable models, we aim to eventually understand spatial variations of fault zone rheology on the megathrust and to provide information that will be useful for future earthquake/tsunami hazard studies and early tsunami warning systems.
